PUMCHEm 1953, os professores Song Ruyao e Wang Qiaozhang fundaram o Departamento de Estomatologia com base na antiga sala de tratamento de doenças dentárias. Desde então, com a chegada de muitos profissionais como Lai Qinshi, Qian Xuejun, Tian Enshun, Huang Zhaojun, Yu Jiazhen, Gao Menglin e Wen Zhuxian, o departamento entrou em um período de rápido desenvolvimento. Naquela época, o departamento tinha uma posição acadêmica elevada na comunidade odontológica nacional: o professor Song Ruyao era editor-chefe da revista da Sociedade Chinesa de Odontologia e presidente da divisão de odontologia da Sociedade Chinesa de Medicina; os professores Wang Qiaozhang e Yu Jiazhen foram membros do comitê permanente da mesma divisão.
Em outubro de 1978, os professores Wang Qiaozhang e Song Ruyao admitiram a primeira turma de três pós-graduandos. Em 1979, foi estabelecido o laboratório do departamento, onde foram realizados trabalhos de pesquisa e clínicos nas áreas de patologia, imunologia e bioquímica. No campo da odontologia, o professor Wang Qiaozhang foi reconhecido por suas contribuições à etiologia da cárie dentária, estabelecendo a teoria do glicogênio, durante a primeira conferência científica nacional após uma década de turbulência.
Em 1983, o departamento começou a realizar tratamentos clínicos e pesquisas com laser em odontologia, recebendo em 1986 o segundo prêmio de progresso científico do Ministério da Indústria Eletrônica. Na cirurgia oral, a técnica de transplante de retalho de osso ilíaco vascularizado foi considerada uma tecnologia avançada, mesmo no século XXI. Em 1994, o departamento colaborou com a Universidade de Columbia para estabelecer o primeiro centro de implantes dentários da China, iniciando pesquisas clínicas e básicas nesta área. Após a fusão com o Hospital Geral de Correios e Telecomunicações em maio de 2002, o departamento teve a oportunidade de se expandir ainda mais.
