PUMCHNel 1953, i professori Song Ruyao e Wang Qiaozhang hanno fondato un dipartimento di odontoiatria indipendente basato su una precedente sala di trattamento delle malattie dentali. Con l'arrivo di numerosi professionisti come Lai Qingsheng, Qian Xuejun, Tian Enshun, Huang Zhaojun, Yu Jiazhen, Gao Menglin e Wen Zhuxian, il dipartimento di odontoiatria dell'ospedale Xiehe ha vissuto un periodo di rapida crescita. All'epoca, il dipartimento godeva di un'alta reputazione accademica nel panorama odontoiatrico nazionale: il professor Song Ruyao era il redattore capo della rivista della Società Cinese di Odontoiatria e presidente della sezione odontoiatrica della Società Medica Cinese; il professor Wang Qiaozhang e il professor Yu Jiazhen erano membri del comitato centrale della sezione odontoiatrica.
Nel 1978, i professori Wang Qiaozhang e Song Ruyao hanno accolto i primi tre studenti di dottorato. Nel 1979 è stato istituito un laboratorio di odontoiatria, avviando ricerche e lavori clinici in patologia, immunologia e biochimica. In particolare, il professor Wang Qiaozhang è stato riconosciuto per i suoi risultati nella ricerca sull'eziologia della carie dentale, contribuendo alla formulazione della 'teoria del glicogeno' durante la prima conferenza scientifica nazionale dopo un decennio di turbolenze.
Nel 1983, il dipartimento ha iniziato a implementare trattamenti clinici e ricerche con laser in odontoiatria, ricevendo nel 1986 il secondo premio per il progresso scientifico dal Ministero dell'Industria Elettronica. Le tecniche di trapianto osseo e le ricerche sulle cellule di carcinoma squamoso orale hanno posizionato il dipartimento all'avanguardia nel panorama nazionale. Nel 1994, in collaborazione con la Columbia University, è stato istituito il primo centro di implantologia dentale in Cina, avviando ricerche cliniche e di base in questo campo.
