PUMCHEn 1953, el profesor Song Ruyiao y la profesora Wang Qiaozhang establecieron un departamento independiente de estomatología sobre la base de la sala de tratamiento dental existente. Posteriormente, con la llegada de un gran número de profesionales como Lai Qingsheng, Qian Xuejun, Tian Enshun, Huang Zhaojun, Yu Jiazhen, Gao Menglin y Wen Zhuxian, el departamento de estomatología del Hospital Xiehe entró en un período de rápido desarrollo. En ese momento, el departamento tenía una alta posición académica en la comunidad dental nacional: el profesor Song Ruyiao era el editor en jefe de la revista de estomatología de China y presidente de la división de estomatología de la Asociación Médica de China; la profesora Wang Qiaozhang y el profesor Yu Jiazhen habían sido miembros permanentes de la división de estomatología de la Asociación Médica de China y miembros del consejo editorial de la revista de estomatología de China.
En octubre de 1978, los profesores Wang Qiaozhang y Song Ruyiao admitieron a la primera promoción de tres estudiantes de posgrado. En 1979, se estableció un laboratorio de estomatología, donde se llevaron a cabo investigaciones clínicas y científicas en patología, inmunología y bioquímica. En el ámbito de la odontología, el profesor Wang Qiaozhang fue reconocido en la primera conferencia científica nacional después de diez años de agitación por sus logros en la investigación de la etiología de la caries, estableciendo la 'teoría del glucógeno'. En 1983, se iniciaron amplios trabajos clínicos y de investigación sobre tratamientos láser en cirugía y medicina dental, obteniendo en 1986 el segundo premio de progreso científico del Ministerio de Industria Electrónica.
En cirugía oral, el injerto de colgajo de hueso ilíaco vascularizado fue una técnica avanzada en los años 80 y sigue siendo innovadora en el siglo XXI. La investigación sobre el colgajo temporal vascularizado para la reconstrucción de defectos mandibulares, iniciada en 1987, fue pionera en el país. También se lograron avances en la investigación sobre cultivos de células de carcinoma oral, tratamientos láser para hemangiomas y tumores malignos. En el campo de las enfermedades de la mucosa oral, se han realizado investigaciones clínicas y de laboratorio sobre la población con leucoplasia y el síndrome de Sjögren. En 1994, el departamento colaboró con la Universidad de Columbia para establecer el primer centro de implantología dental en China, llevando a cabo investigaciones clínicas y fundamentales en este ámbito. Desde mayo de 2002, tras la fusión con el Hospital General de Correos y Telecomunicaciones, el departamento ha tenido la oportunidad de seguir creciendo y desarrollándose.
