Top-tier MDT Joint Center for Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy, Pathology, and Neuroimaging

HERITAGE & OVERVIEW

Department Overview & Heritage

The Center for Hypothalamic & Pituitary Diseases at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, relying on the National Guiding Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Complex Critical Illnesses, is composed of a multidisciplinary MDT team of experts from the Departments of Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, and Radiation Oncology, along with specialists in Neuroimaging, Ophthalmology, Gynecological Endocrinology, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, and Immunology. The center has a comprehensive multidisciplinary medical and technical team with high medical standards and information management capabilities, meeting the needs for medical care, education, and research. With years of talent accumulation, the center has strong medical service outreach and influence, capable of providing clinical, educational, and research technical guidance for hypothalamic-pituitary-related diseases nationwide, promoting overall development in the field, and actively organizing or coordinating academic exchanges and collaborations with related specialties in other developed countries.

1. Comprehensive specialty department setup: including Neurosurgery, Endocrinology, Radiation Oncology, Neuroimaging, Ophthalmology, Gynecological Endocrinology, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, and Immunology.

2. Complete supporting personnel and facilities in related fields: including 10 fixed physicians, over 20 senior specialized nurses, 4 fixed surgical days per week, 3 high-definition surgical microscopes, and various surgical instruments.

3. Stable and extensive patient population base: The Endocrinology and Neurosurgery departments see thousands of pituitary-related outpatient cases annually, with a well-established and efficient referral and multidisciplinary consultation green channel.

4. Relatively independent ward beds: including 3 wards with approximately 30 controllable beds.

5. The Neurosurgery department performs nearly 1,000 minimally invasive pituitary surgeries annually, leading the country in endonasal endoscopic sellar surgery (accounting for 36% of the department's bed count).

6. The center has a complete platform related to medical care, education, research, prevention, quality control, and information management.

7. National and global influence in the field of pituitary diseases: The center is a founding unit of the China Pituitary Disease Registry Center and the China Pituitary Adenoma Collaborative Group, currently with 46 member units and over 100 pituitary disease experts, having compiled 8 guidelines related to the field of pituitary diseases, including the 1992 'Clinical and Basic Research on Hormone-secreting Pituitary Tumors,' which won the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first such award in this field.

I. Medical Service Capability: The center has established a systematic multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment platform for hypothalamic-pituitary diseases, utilizing multiple core technologies to conduct diagnosis and treatment, fulfilling all medical performance indicators set by the National Health Commission.

1. Scope of diseases treated: including but not limited to functional pituitary tumors (such as Cushing's disease, acromegaly, prolactinomas, TSH adenomas), non-functional pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, pituitary cysts, sellar germ cell tumors, chordomas, pituitary abscesses, lymphocytic hypophysitis, and other rare and complex sellar diseases.

2. Setup of diagnostic and treatment departments: The Pituitary Center integrates the Departments of Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, Neuroimaging, Ophthalmology, Gynecological Endocrinology, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, and Immunology. Since the establishment of the pituitary tumor collaborative group in 1979, led by Endocrinology and Neurosurgery, the multidisciplinary collaboration model has evolved over 40 years, with close interdepartmental cooperation and relatively fixed multidisciplinary consultation times and locations, averaging ≥200 MDT patients in the pituitary field annually.

3. Diagnostic and treatment services: The center can provide necessary medical auxiliary examinations and supporting facilities for hypothalamic-pituitary diagnosis and treatment, such as intraoperative MRI, PET-CT, and hybrid operating rooms. It possesses routine diagnostic and treatment techniques while also independently conducting advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, such as hormone testing, endoscopic biopsies, and surgeries, with an average of ≥200 endoscopic procedures annually. The center has strong capabilities to manage various complex and critical hypothalamic-pituitary conditions, achieving top-tier overall cure and improvement rates in the industry.

II. Research Capability: 1. Scientific talent and platform setup: The center is a founding unit of the China Pituitary Disease Registry Center and the China Pituitary Adenoma Collaborative Group, with established standardized biobanks, clinical disease databases, and online disease registration systems.

2. Research projects: The center has strong clinical research capabilities, having long-term led dozens of major research projects, including the National Science and Technology Support Program and the National Natural Science Foundation.

3. Research achievements: As the first completion unit, the center has received the Huaxia Medical Award. It has been granted ≥10 invention patents in related fields, some of which have completed clinical translation. As the first or corresponding author unit, it has continuously published over a hundred high-level academic papers in international authoritative journals and domestic core journals, with several research results published in high-impact international medical journals.

III. Social Responsibility: 1. Construction of medical alliances: The center has engaged in various forms of medical alliance construction, as a founding unit of the China Pituitary Adenoma Collaborative Group, successfully hosting 9 national annual meetings since 2012, and has organized and formulated 8 guidelines and expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary adenomas; it has assisted 46 hospitals in establishing multidisciplinary collaborative treatment centers for pituitary adenomas; the collaborative group organizes nearly a hundred related forums, seminars, training classes, and lectures annually; member units perform nearly 10,000 surgeries related to hypothalamic-pituitary diseases each year. It helps more physicians understand the multidisciplinary cooperation model, joint consultation model, and share experiences in the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary diseases, promoting standardized treatment of pituitary adenomas nationwide.

2. Fulfillment of public welfare and medical support: The center actively responds to hospital calls, with several members participating in activities such as support for Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and counterpart assistance, while also organizing free clinics, supporting impoverished areas, and assisting in poverty alleviation, demonstrating nationwide social welfare outreach and influence.
