Department of Breast Surgery

Breast diseases are common among women, with breast cancer ranking first in the incidence of various tumors among women in urban areas of China, posing a serious threat to women's health and life. The Breast Specialty Group at Peking Union Medical College Hospital was proposed in the 1980s by Professor Zeng Xianjiu, one of the founders of surgery in China, and established with his support and assistance, with Professor Huang Hanyuan as the group leader. Under Professor Huang's leadership, the Breast Specialty Group has continuously developed, creating significant social and economic benefits. To better serve patients and advance the discipline, the Breast Specialty Group was expanded into the Department of Breast Surgery in February 2006, with Professor Sun Qiang as the director.

The Department of Breast Surgery currently has 45 inpatient beds, treating over 50,000 patients annually, performing more than 3,600 surgeries, including over 1,600 breast cancer surgeries. The services offered include: diagnosis and surgical treatment of breast cancer; comprehensive treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and biological therapy post-breast cancer surgery; diagnosis and treatment of various benign breast diseases; breast reconstruction; and public education and screening for breast cancer. Through long-term medical practice, the department has developed unique personalized treatment protocols, such as the effective use of self-formulated traditional Chinese medicine for treating breast hyperplasia; aesthetic outcomes from small or concealed incisions for benign tumors; rapid recovery and fewer complications after breast cancer surgery; concealed incisions for breast-conserving surgery, with some patients undergoing procedures through the areola; and pioneering clinical biopsies of non-palpable breast lesions using X-ray and ultrasound localization, significantly enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases. The department has researched and established clinical pathways for breast disease treatment at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, achieving good results, with the single disease charge for breast cancer surgeries being the lowest in the city for several consecutive years. Currently, the center is equipped with digital mammography machines capable of stereotactic localization and advanced color ultrasound devices for locating and performing surgical biopsies on various non-palpable breast lesions. among others related to breast cancer genetics. The department possesses strong technical capabilities and maintains a high level in medical care, education, and research, ranking among the top in the country.

The Department of Breast Surgery also places great emphasis on public welfare activities related to breast cancer awareness and education. On October 29, 2009, the 'Peking Union Pink Garden' public welfare organization was established, aimed at helping patients with breast diseases understand their conditions through psychological counseling, boosting their confidence to face their illnesses with a positive and optimistic attitude; simultaneously, it emphasizes the prevention of breast diseases, widely promoting the concept of 'Cherish Your Breasts, Care for Your Health' in society. The 'Peking Union Pink Garden' regularly holds activities that have received unanimous praise from patients, encouraging more patients to join the ranks of volunteers.
