Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital was established in 1920 and is one of the earliest ophthalmology departments in China. Many internationally renowned ophthalmologists have worked here, earning it the title of 'Eastern Vienna Eye Center.' Since its establishment in 1920, the department has continuously developed into a comprehensive ophthalmic base integrating medical care, education, and research, leading the field nationally, with some projects reaching international advanced levels. It is one of the first training sites for master's and doctoral degrees and postdoctoral research stations, as well as one of the first standardized training bases for resident physicians.

Currently, the Department of Ophthalmology has two outpatient areas, Dongdan and Xidan, with the ophthalmology ward located at Dongdan, offering a total of 49 beds. The department includes specialized groups for fundus diseases, glaucoma, cornea and refractive surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, uveitis, optometry and strabismus, oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery, genetic ophthalmology, and ophthalmic epidemiology and blindness prevention, as well as an ophthalmic laboratory for clinical and research use. Under the leadership of nationally renowned experts such as Professors Zhong Yong, Chen Youxin, and Zhang Meifen, the department has formed a complete national-level subspecialty center covering fundus diseases, glaucoma, cataracts, corneal diseases, uveitis, and neuro-ophthalmology.

The department has experienced and well-known experts in various specialties serving patients with difficult eye diseases from all over the country. With the opening of the new outpatient building and surgical building in 2012, equipped with diagnostic and treatment facilities on par with world-class ophthalmic centers, the treatment environment has significantly improved. Currently, the department offers general outpatient services (at both Dongdan and Xidan campuses), specialized outpatient services, premium outpatient services, and international outpatient services to meet patients' diverse medical needs, with an annual outpatient volume exceeding 120,000 visits. The department performs various ophthalmic surgeries, including vitreoretinal surgery, femtosecond laser correction for myopia, cataract extraction, intraocular lens implantation for phakic eyes, strabismus correction, and oculoplastic surgeries, with an annual surgical volume exceeding 8,000 procedures. Additionally, the department has successfully completed medical missions for national and state health and family planning commissions, including poverty alleviation in border areas, aid to Xinjiang and Tibet, and assistance to Africa and Australia.
