The Department of Orthopedics at Peking Union Medical College Hospital originated from the Orthopedic Department of Peking Union Medical College, established in the 1920s. It is a premier clinical and research center for orthopedics in China, where many pioneers in the field, such as Professors Meng Jimiao, Wang Guisheng, Wu Zhikang, Wang Fuquan, and Song Xianwen, have taught and worked. Under the leadership of the former director, renowned orthopedic scientist and former chairman of the Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Academician Qiu Guixing, the department has received numerous honors, including recognition as a key discipline by the Ministry of Education and a key specialty by the Ministry of Health. The department, led by top experts like Academician Qiu Guixing and Professor Weng Xisheng, has assembled a national-level expert team specializing in subspecialties such as spine, joints, trauma, and bone tumors.
Since the 1980s, the department has been a pioneer in the surgical treatment of spinal deformities in China, introducing, improving, and promoting internationally advanced techniques and equipment such as Harrington, Luque, Zielke, CD, Galveston, and TSRH for the treatment of various types of scoliosis, achieving excellent results. Series research on scoliosis has received third and second prizes from Beijing, the Health Commission (formerly the Ministry of Health), and the National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Currently, the department is one of the comprehensive orthopedic medical centers in China, focusing on spinal surgery, with specialties in joint surgery, geriatric trauma surgery, sports medicine, bone tumors, foot and ankle surgery, and minimally invasive surgery.
The department emphasizes the cultivation of young talent, allowing them to learn and inherit the excellent qualities and work styles of senior experts. Several young doctors have been sent for further training in Australia, Japan, the United States, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and have returned to become key members of the department. The department also values exchanges with renowned international institutions and experts, having invited orthopedic specialists from the United States, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom for surgical demonstrations, academic reports, and discussions to enhance the diagnostic and research capabilities of orthopedics. It emphasizes the integration of research and clinical practice, having applied for and undertaken 86 research projects funded by the Beijing Science and Technology Commission, the National Natural Science Foundation, and as chief scientists for National 863 projects, with a total research funding exceeding 43.8 million RMB.
The department currently has 3 wards with 132 beds, including general and special wards to meet various medical needs. It is divided into specialized groups for spinal surgery, joint surgery, orthopedic trauma, sports medicine, bone tumors, foot and ankle surgery, and minimally invasive orthopedics. Patients can choose from orthopedic expert outpatient services, special outpatient services, and general outpatient services based on their needs, while the orthopedic emergency service is available 24/7 throughout the year to provide medical care at any time.
The department includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 12 professors, 12 associate professors, 16 attending physicians, 6 resident physicians, 2 postdoctoral researchers, 16 visiting physicians, and 37 doctoral and master's students. It has established the Orthopedic Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, with 3 full-time and part-time researchers.

The idiopathic scoliosis classification proposed by Academician Qiu Guixing's team is internationally recognized; they led the discovery of TBX6 gene mutations as the most significant pathogenic cause of congenital scoliosis (published in NEJM), maintaining an international leading position in severe spinal deformity osteotomy correction, artificial joint replacement, and minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques for sports injuries.
