HERITAGE & OVERVIEW
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Peking Union Medical College Hospital was founded by the late renowned respiratory disease expert, Professor Zhu Guiqing, and has a long-standing history. As one of the earliest established respiratory departments in China, it serves as a top clinical and research center for respiratory science and a center for the diagnosis and treatment of complex respiratory diseases, boasting many esteemed predecessors and well-known professors in the field of respiratory medicine. Notable figures who have taught or worked here include Professor Luo Weici and Professor Zhu Yuanjue, both of whom have received the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from the Chinese Respiratory Physicians Association, as well as Professor Huang Xizhen, Professor Li Longyun, Professor Cai Baichang, and Professor Lu Weixuan, who have received the 'Chinese Respiratory Physician Award', and Professor Lin Yaoguang, who has received the 'Outstanding Contribution Award' from the Respiratory Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. In August 2018, the department was officially renamed the Department of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine (PCCM).
The department currently includes 11 groups: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Group, Sleep Disordered Breathing Group, Interstitial Lung Disease Group, Lung Cancer Center, Pulmonary Embolism and Vascular Disease Group, Asthma Group, Critical Care Medicine Group, Infection Group, Intervention Group, Respiratory Therapy Group, and Smoking Cessation Group. The Department of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine currently has 33 practicing physicians, including 10 chief physicians, 10 associate chief physicians, and 13 attending physicians. The interstitial lung disease group, led by Professor Xu Zuojun, the lung cancer diagnosis and treatment center, led by Professors Wang Mengzhao and Zhang Li, the respiratory sleep center, led by Professor Xiao Yi, and the pulmonary vascular disease group, led by Professors Shi Juhong and Xu Kaifeng, have complete team structures and are distinctive features of the department.
The annual 'Beijing Union Medical College Respiratory Medicine Summit' has been held 12 times to date and is well-received by respiratory professionals nationwide. The Department of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine also organizes various training courses each year, including the 'Beijing Union Medical College Respiratory Medicine Summit Training Course', 'Seminar on Difficult Respiratory Diseases and Diffuse Interstitial Lung Disease', 'Shuifu Garden Forum on Advances and Standardized Treatment of Respiratory Diseases', and 'New Perspectives on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Thoracic Malignancies', to promote the dissemination and development of respiratory medicine.
