PUMCHDe afdeling gastro-enterologie is een van de oudste specialismen van het ziekenhuis, opgericht onder leiding van professor Zhang Xiaoqian, een autoriteit in de moderne interne geneeskunde van China, en professor Chen Minzhang, een gerenommeerd expert in gastro-enterologie. Na jaren van inspanning en toewijding is de afdeling uitgegroeid tot een invloedrijke discipline, zowel nationaal als internationaal.
De afdeling beschikt over een breed scala aan subspecialismen, hooggekwalificeerd personeel en sterke klinische en laboratoriumtechnische capaciteiten, en fungeert als een hoogwaardig centrum voor gastro-enterologie, endoscopie en de behandeling van complexe en ernstige aandoeningen. Binnen de afdeling zijn er hoogstaande, nationaal gerichte centra voor de diagnose en behandeling van inflammatoire darmziekten en alvleesklierziekten, evenals een trainingscentrum voor gastro-intestinale endoscopie en een centrum voor de diagnose en behandeling van gastro-intestinale functie- en motiliteitsstoornissen.

Tweede plaats op de nationale reputatielijst voor gastro-enterologie, een academisch centrum voor de IBD-groep van de Chinese Vereniging voor Gastro-enterologie. Beschikt over een toonaangevend endoscopisch centrum in het land, met apparatuur en aantal procedures in de nationale top, en heeft een uitstekende reputatie op het gebied van de endoscopische minimaal invasieve behandeling van de ziekte van Crohn, colitis ulcerosa, chronische pancreatitis, gal- en alvleesklier tumoren en vroege gastro-intestinale kanker.
Met minimaal invasieve endoscopische technieken als kern, in combinatie met multidisciplinaire darm MDT-consultaties, biedt de afdeling een volledige diagnose en behandeling van complexe gastro-intestinale aandoeningen, van moleculaire oorzaken tot minimaal invasieve genezing.
