PUMCH병원의 알레르기과는 중국 임상 알레르기학의 발원지이자 요람입니다.
1938년, 병원의 장청송 교수는 미국에서 수학하며 이비인후과를 배우는 동시에 알레르기학을 공부했습니다. 장 교수는 1939년 귀국 후 당시 병원에서 알레르기 외래 진료소를 설립할 계획을 세웠으나, 당시 중국이 항일 전쟁 중이어서 중단될 수밖에 없었습니다.
신중국이 설립된 후, 1952년부터 장청송 교수는 예시태와 함께 물질이 부족하고 조건이 극히 열악한 상황에서 알레르기과를 설립하기 위해 노력했습니다. 건국 초기, 중국에서 전례가 없는 알레르기과를 세우는 것은 정말로 무에서 유를 창조하는 일이었습니다. 예시태 교수는 여가 시간을 이용해 도서관에서 자료를 찾아보고 알레르기학의 기본 지식과 현황을 이해하기 위해 당시 찾을 수 있는 모든 자료를 종합적으로 학습했습니다. 예 교수는 회상하며 “당시 협화병원 도서관은 정말로 낮과 밤이 끊이지 않고 사람들이 몰려들었고, 밤에 문을 닫을 때는 여러 번 종을 울리고 ‘닫을 시간입니다’라고 크게 외쳐야 사람들이 책을 덮고 천천히 떠났습니다. 많은 독서를 통해 알레르기학이 의학 전반에서 정말로 독특한 꽃과 같다는 것을 발견했습니다. 그것은 방대하고 신비로우며, 이 새로운 학문에 대한 저의 호감과 흥미를 더욱 자극했습니다.”라고 말했습니다.
